Week 6 Review; tomorrow you get the big week 7 preview
My own team is decimated at this point. Injuries run rampant in the NFL, and I have somehow figured out how to consolidate them for my friends. I can however find solace in talking about the players that are healthy and performing. The league is starting to shape up now. We are starting to learn who is a good play and who has fucked us so far. The NFL is a copy cat league. What works is what works. Teams all over the league have begun to use tandem backs in alarming numbers (for fantasy shit heads). There are only a handfull of uncontested situations in the league.
The league reacts to whats effective and often forces teams to alter their game plan; Indy is now a defensive running team that asks Peyton to manage the game. This man threw me two TD's last year and he is now a game manager. He's still a top 3-5 fantasy QB when it's all said and done, but he's not the top option. Teams reacted to last year. They are jamming the recievers at the line and forcing Edge and his back ups to beat them in the screen and in the running game. Which is working and doesen't seem to be changing. The Broncos gave Cracky McCrackerstein Jake Plummer the ball last year and let him pass with his left arm (though he had 27TDs). That didn't work out. Now their 5-1 by guess what; multiple backs and a revamped defense. The Bengals? revamped defense and multiple backs. They also have the best young QB in the game. The way to find value in a player fantasy wise is to evaluate what his use to his team is. Don't go nuts over a guy who has one great week. Only superstars put up nasty games every week. I'd rather have a player thats an important but unspectacular part of his teams attack than some jabroni who catches two tds one week. It never hurts to stink finger your boys (thats very gay) and steal their players when their hurting. Take a look at targets and touches to get an idea of who is of use to you. I'll post the yahoo link to those stasts when they are released.
Personally I took one in the jaw last week when I was forced to get a running back through trade. But it's never over. Take the adversity as a challenge. Dont be a moop and let injuries ruin your season. It all evens out if you keep your head on a swivel. Play on playa, its only week 7.
Last week I made some predictions, some were off, some were right on. Either way several stories emerged from week 6;
- Randy Moss injures his groin and puts up a doughnut. Moss fucked me last year with a bad hammy so I know that he can take a while to return from injury. Moss never missed games in his career untill late last year. For all of his talent, Moss is still quite a bitch when it comes to toughness. He is notorious for shying away from contact and slants across the middle. Don't get me wrong, Moss is an uber talent, but he has his limitations. I would say that TO is clearly the best real and fantasy reciever in football. He is somehow equal parts cock breath asshole and superstar.
- Santana Moss and Brunell are great together so far (i cant believe i just said that). There's that funny ESPN ad about that tool who says he likes S. Moss better this year than Randy, and it's all intended to show how oblivious this guy is, well it's aparantly not funny. Santana is on a ridiculous yards pace, with 650 through 5 games (127 per). Think about that.
- Tony G continues to puzzle me. He got sufficient looks this week (8) and only turned in 2 catches on a KC team that was moving the ball. With all world tackle Roaff back, I assumed they could get last years reception leader (102) some numbers. You have to stick with him, but look for Heath Miller or Putzier as marginal back-ups if your hurting.
- Alexander is a monster, with 12 rushing TDs in 6 games, after having 16 total last year, which was stellar anyway. The difference is Hassleback is managing games, and not trying to win them.
- LT, thats all, LT. He (and Brees) were traded on draft day for Mike Vick, who would you rather have?
- The Edge is surprising with his TDs, he always got crazy totals, but not the goaline looks, he is hurting Peyton's value badly.
- Once again Lamont Jordan is the single best #2 RB in fantasy football, he can be your #1 too, but he was drafted in the majority of leagues as a 2. He can get no TD and still put up great numbers with his reception totals.
- Chris Perry continues to cut into Rudi's value. Perry was a Heisman finalist and is a great screen pass threat. Without a last minute TD off a turnonver Rudi would have been weak again. But Rudi is still a solid #2, but handcuff him too Perry if you can.
- My best sleeper call last week was Patrick Pass, now I obvioiusly didnt know that Dillon was out. But regardless this guy is impressive in the screen game and has been the most effective valve for Brady so far.
- Tatum Bell is now the better play in Denver. I can't imagine how the Bronco's staff can sit him. He's explosive and is breaking big plays.
- Brooks put up a good game despite his rampant meth use and penchant for 12 year old thai boys, as did Smith and Stecker (sans meth), I'd like to see this continue before you can trust the Saints, but keep them on your squad.
- Curtis Martin is back to being a #2 back after last years incredible numbers. I like Curtis, he's a Pitt Panther and a solid dude. Plus he's in an offense that needs him desperately.
- I'll do a complete week 6 preivew tomorrow, although the site may be much different due to its never ending tech issues.
